The crossover is not only price. Lithium's longer life and better behaviour in warm spaces often makes it cheaper per year of service once cooling is poor or floor load is constrained.
Heat is first. After that comes chronic under- or over-charging from a failed charger stage, and then deep discharge when an outage outlasts runtime and the string is left flat. A battery that has been fully discharged and not recharged promptly can sulphate beyond recovery in days. Regular self-tests catch capacity loss before it becomes a surprise during a real event.
Run the built-in self-test and read reported capacity. When measured capacity falls below about 80 percent of nameplate, or when the calendar age passes the chemistry's expected window, plan the swap regardless of whether the unit still passes. Replacing the whole string together matters more than saving one good block, because mixing ages in series forces the new cells to fight the old ones.
