Online vs Line-Interactive UPS: Which Topology Fits Your Site?

For mission-critical loads such as data halls, medical imaging suites and process-control cabinets, an online double-conversion UPS is the correct choice. For offices, retail point-of-sale terminals and small edge closets on a reasonably stable grid, a line-interactive UPS delivers most of the protection at roughly half the capital cost. The decision comes down to four variables: how sensitive the load is, how clean the incoming supply is, what efficiency target the site must hit, and what an hour of downtime actually costs.

How the Two Topologies Actually Work

A line-interactive UPS feeds the load from filtered mains during normal operation. An automatic voltage regulator, usually a tapped autotransformer, corrects moderate over-voltage and under-voltage without drawing from the battery. The inverter only engages when the mains falls outside its acceptance window, and the changeover takes typically two to six milliseconds.

An online double-conversion UPS rectifies incoming AC to DC, then inverts it back to AC continuously. The load never sees raw utility power. Online units accept a wide input frequency window and hold the output rock steady.

The Numbers That Decide It: Efficiency and Total Cost

Modern online UPS designs reach 96 to 97 percent efficiency in full double-conversion mode, and 98 to 99 percent in economy mode where the inverter is held on standby. Against a line-interactive unit at 97.5 percent, the realistic gap in double conversion is two to four points.

Sizing and Runtime Notes

Whichever topology you pick, size the unit at 70 to 80 percent of its rated capacity so there is headroom for load growth and for inrush from motors or laser printers. Check the load power factor: a UPS rated 10 kVA at 0.9 output power factor supplies 9 kW, not 10 kW. Where a generator provides long-duration backup, battery runtime only has to cover start and stabilisation, usually five to ten minutes.
